Instructions for installing the CapWizSavr

If you connect your Capacitor Wizard to a charged capacitor or forget to turn off the power to the unit you are troubleshooting...ZAP!. Your Capacitor Wizard will be damaged. Sometimes the damage is slight (the two one-ohm resistors burn out) but other times the damage is more severe. Repair procedures are available at http://www.awiz.com/pdfs/sbullit6.pdf and repair parts can be purchased for $15.00 .  Even if the repair is simple and you have the parts handy, you lose valuable time.

Now avoid damage with AnaTek's CapWizSavr. Add this patented circuit and your Capacitor Wizard works as well as it always did but is protected from charges or live lines up to 400 VDC. Your Capacitor Wizard will even work on live circuits, but we do not recommend it. The Capacitor Wizard is protected by CapWizSavr but you are not!

Installation is simple:

Step 1: Change the one ohm resistors to the 0.82 ohms supplied with CapWizSavr

Step 2: Move the Capacitor Wizard test leads to the CapWizSavr board

Step 3: Connect the CapWizSavr to the Capacitor Wizard board.

That's it! Just 8 solder connections and your Capacitor Wizard is protected!

Questions and Answers about CapWizSavr

  1. Why do I need a CapWizSavr? I can just put two diodes back to back across the leads.
  1. Two diodes will protect the CapWizSavr but not the capacitor you are testing. If there is a charge on the capacitor a very large current will come from the capacitor through one of the diodes. That current can damage the capacitor and the diode. You are supposed to be finding bad caps, not creating them! CapWizSavr controls the discharge currents to a safe level.
  1. Why do I need a CapWizSavr? I can just put a blocking capacitor in series with one of the leads.
  1. Nope. This will not work with the Capacitor Wizard. The Capacitor Wizard's output is a carefully tuned circuit. Putting a simple blocking capacitor in series will result in erroneous readings. As a matter of fact you can actually get indications of negative ESR under some circumstances! CapWizSavr retains the inherent accuracy of the Capacitor Wizard.
  1. But the CapWizSavr uses a blocking capacitor. What gives?
  1. Yes, CapWizSavr includes a blocking capacitor. But the characteristics of the rest of the circuitry are tuned with the blocking capacitor so that the Capacitor Wizard operates normally with no loss of accuracy.
  1. Does Doug Jones (the designer of Capacitor Wizard) know about CapWizSavr?
  1. He sure does. Doug evaluated CapWizSavr and is convinced that it works. In fact, he will be offering CapWizSavr as an option for the Capacitor Wizard.
  1. Will my Capacitor Wizard work the same as before?
  1. You bet. Capacitor Wizard will work exactly as it did before. CapWizSavr is carefully designed to retain the accuracy of Capacitor Wizard while still protecting it.
  1. How hard is it to install?
  1. A competent electronics technician can install CapWizSavr in 5 minutes. Eight solder joints is all that is required.
  1. The circuit looks simple. What the heck is patented?
  1. There is a patent pending on the design of the CapWizSavr because there is a very unique circuit included in it. That circuit will be used in other applications. The Capacitor Wizard is just the first such application. "All things should be as simple as possible, but not simpler" - A. Einstein
